Job Description

Hometrack is the leading provider of Automated Valuation Models (AVMs), housing market insight and data to inform critical decision making for businesses working across the UK residential sector. Founded in 1999, the business has grown to over 60 staff in the UK and Australia and became the Data Services division of ZPG plc in January 2017.

Turning raw data into actionable insight for decision making in residential property is at the heart of Hometrack`s value proposition. Hometrack`s AVM is used by 18 of the top 25 lenders and we deliver a range of insight and analytics to multiple blue-chip businesses. The demand for insight and analytics to inform decision making is expanding rapidly. There is significant scope derive further value-added insight from our unique datasets which have expanded further since the business joined ZPG.

We are creating a new role for a data scientist to join the Data and Insight team to lead on the creation of value added data for our solutions. We`re looking for a candidate who is highly numerate and has a track record in the practical application of statistical and analytical techniques, working with models to make and test hypotheses and turn data into insight for decision making. You`ll need to be able to communicate and work effectively with a wide range of internal stakeholders from customer facing teams to technical experts and business leaders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Key stakeholder in the creation and development of a single property view across ZPG covering address level attributes and property related events.
  • Conduct detailed analyses on a wide range of property, mortgage and spatial data from across Hometrack and ZPG.
  • Own key strands of R&D activity that leverage existing datasets to enhance the coverage of existing data sets and create new value-added data and insight to meet business needs.
  • Generate new analytical models and create robust granular housing market analysis and robust predictive metrics.
  • Documentation of R&D and analysis - presentation of results to key stakeholders, creation of specifications for business analysts and data engineers to create deployable built datasets.
  • Manage the technical aspects of Hometrack`s UK House Price Indices and lead on the technical development of new rental indices using the same underlying methodology.


  • High-calibre degree in Statistics, Mathematics or another scientific discipline.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • 2-4 years` hands-on experience applying the above within a business environment.
  • Experience working with data mining techniques and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to cleanse and analyse large datasets, identify trends and develop robust analysis.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies and some knowledge of cloud computing and storage strategies.
  • Experience with leading statistical software packages and programming languages, T-SQL, R coupled with excellent knowledge of SQL Server (essential).
  • Creative thinking, initiative and outstanding problem-solving abilities.
